In 1998 Daimler-Benz purchased Chrysler, forming DaimlerChrysler AG. From 1998 to 2007, Chrysler and its subsidiaries were part of the German based Daimler AG. DaimlerChrysler announced the sale of most of  Chrysler Group to American private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, L.P in May 2007 for US$ 7.4 billion. DaimlerChrysler AG announced on May 14, 2007 that it would sell 80.1% of its stake in the Chrysler Group to Cerberus Capital Management

The Italian Fiat and Chrysler announced that they have a non-binding term sheet to form a global alliance in April, 2009. Under the terms of the potential agreement, Fiat could take a stake in Chrysler and gain access to its North American dealer network in exchange for providing Chrysler with the platform to build smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles in the US and reciprocal access to Fiat's global distribution network.
